Issue:
You have installed a new recorder and wish to connect to it via a phone mobile APP or view it from a desktop with the Remote Video Management SW StarNet. DVRs and NVRs have (2) IP addresses; One is a local address commonly referred to as LAN (Local Area Network) and the outside IP address is referred to as the WAN (Wide Area Network). Within the same network, the recorder can be accessed with the LAN address but outside the LAN the unit must be able to connect via the WAN address.
For the unit to connect via the WAN address, the Router located physically at the recorder location MUST have the ports forwarded in the router so the router knows where to "route" the request the router receives. This is called Port Forwarding.
Solution:
The Costar recorders have certain ports that need to be opened to use the Remote SW or the mobile APP.
StarNet Recorders:
The older DVRs had (3) ports that needed to be opened. This also applies to the newer ET series of TVI/ANALOG ET recorders. These ports are:
Watch = 8016
Admin/Setup = 8200
Search = 10019
The newer Costar NVRs only use one port to gain access to all the services. 8016 is the common port that is used so it must be port-forwarded to gain access to the NVR from the outside world.
Central Point recorders: These recorders use port 9350 for the services.
How to Port Forward:
Costar Tech support does not support Routers or Modems so the port forwarding is up to the Tech on-site or the IT department. There is a website called Portforward.com that has all Modems and Routers listed and they have complete instructions with passwords to access the units and get the port forwarding done.
